We have commented on how road accidents are growing and worry the national authorities . Well, the situation is not exclusive to our country but it is a generalized problem: according to the World Health Organization (WHO), globally, the main cause of death among young people between 15 and 29 years of age are accidents traffic.
In the context of the coronavirus pandemic, circulation by this means of transport grew considerably in our country, due, among others, to home delivery services , which is why there is a high accident rate: according to preliminary data processed by the National Road Safety Observatory (ONSV), in 2020 motorcycle users represented 53.2% of the total deaths and 59.7% of the total injuries registered in Colombia, due to traffic accidents.
23% of all accidents (1.35 million per year) are concentrated in motorcyclists.
In this context, the WHO points out that claims of this type cost 3% of GDP (in most countries), and that apart from deaths, between 20 and 50 million people suffer injuries that in many cases reach cause some disability, which is why it is a global public health issue that demands the greatest attention.
The main causes of accidents in two-wheeled motorized vehicles (according to data from the Quálitas insurer) are:
Speeding
Sudden braking
Slippery surfaces
Imprudence
Precision error
Lost of control
To prevent these claims from continuing to rise, the specialists recall:
Mandatory helmet use
Despite the fact that it is a measure established by law, actually many motorcycle riders do not use it or carry it on their arms under the pretext of comfort.
Its use reduces the risk of death by accident by at least 40% and can lower the chances of suffering a considerable injury by around 70%. When purchasing one, you must always verify that it conforms to the "technical regulations for protective helmets for the use of motorcycles, ATVs, motorcycles, motorcycles and similar", according to Resolution 1080 of March 19, 2019 , of Mintransporte.
Avoid consuming alcohol and drugs
Driving any type of vehicle under an altered state of consciousness increases the chances of having an accident. The WHO assures that even with low levels of blood alcohol concentration (BAC), the risk increases considerably when this index is equal to or greater than 0.04 grams of hemoglobin per deciliter (g / dl).
In the case of narcotics , there is scientific evidence that, for example, consuming amphetamines increases the risk of having a fatal accident by five times.

Do not use the cell phone while driving
Using the smartphone while at the wheel or holding the handlebars increases the chances of being involved in an accident by four times, compared to those who do not.
Have insurance
It is said that there are two types of motorcyclists, those who have already fallen and those who are going to fall, so it is essential to have insurance with good coverage to be protected against any eventuality.
Remember that a motorcycle policy is proportionally more expensive, compared to that of cars, since the risk covered by the insurer is greater.
