From Pont Grup, we have wanted to make a basic guide on the parts of a motorcycle, with the aim that you can know both its operation and the place where they are. Since we are aware that there are many people who ride a motorcycle every day, and that they really are completely unaware of the different parts that make up a motorcycle.

This is a problem, since in addition to not allowing them to identify the different parts of the motorcycle, it will complicate their lives in case of suffering any type of problem that could be solved with a slight notion of basic mechanics for motorcycles.

For this reason, below we are going to carefully review the different parts of the motorcycle and its main components, which will help you to know how to identify all the parts of the motorcycle, and act correctly in the event of any type of breakdown or incident on the road. We started!

The different parts of a motorcycle that you should know

Throttle

The accelerator is found in the right-hand grip of the motorcycle, and it is in charge of increasing or decreasing the engine speed.

Within the different parts of a motorcycle, the accelerator stands out as one of the most important, if not the most important, since without it it would not be possible to operate and be able to circulate with a motorcycle.

Connecting rods

The motorcycle connecting rods have a shape similar to that of an arm, and are responsible for joining the crankshaft with the piston or pistons.

It is one of the most important parts of a motorcycle since it is responsible for allowing movement between the crankshaft and the piston, through a movement similar to that we do when pedaling a bicycle.

The connecting rods are usually made of carbon alloy steel, and are responsible for both the power transmission process and the transformation of the movement.

Chain

The chain is found next to the rear wheel of the motorcycle, and is responsible for carrying out the transmission. It is important not to ride with an excessively slack chain, as it could come off the drive gear and become entangled with the rear wheel.

Likewise, the chain must not be excessively tensioned, since in that case it could end up breaking, causing a serious accident.

Chassis

When talking about the chassis, we are not talking about one more part of the motorcycle, but we could say that it is the backbone of the motorcycle , since it is the part that allows installing and connecting the different components.

The chassis has a series of support points for both the engine and the gas tank, as well as a pivot point where the steering rod is installed.

In general, the chassis is usually made of steel or aluminum, although there are also cases in which they are made of magnesium, carbon or titanium. In any case, it is essential that the material is capable of providing the rigidity and geometry that the chassis needs to remain stable.

In addition, it is important that the chassis is light, but at the same time is also strong enough to be able to support the different components of the motorcycle with guarantee.

Gasoline deposit

We all know where the gasoline tank of our motorcycles is, since we must access it every time we want to refuel.

As its name suggests, the tank is responsible for storing gasoline, and is responsible for making gasoline reach the engine.

Escape

The exhaust is another of the most important parts of a motorcycle, since it allows to expel all the gases that may have been burned during combustion.

Usually, the exhaust is formed by an exhaust manifold, which is responsible for collecting the gases that come out of the cylinders, through an evacuation device. In addition, another of the main functions of the exhaust pipe is to reduce engine noise and also pollution, thanks to the particle filter and the catalyst .

Here we must differentiate between the free exhausts, which help the engine increase its power, but also its temperature and consumption. On the other hand, there are the clogged exhausts, which generate a loss of engine power.

Lights

The importance of the motorcycle lights is beyond any doubt, since they are in charge of offering us the visibility we need to drive, especially at night, and also of alerting the rest of the vehicle of our presence on the road.

There are different types of lights inside a motorcycle:

  • Low beam and high beam
  • Front position lights
  • Hazard warning lights (not all motorcycles have them)
  • Blinking lights
  • Rear position lights
  • Brake lights
  • Left lever, clutch

The levers are one of the most important parts of the motorcycle without any doubt, that is why we are going to talk about both the left lever and the right lever.

In gear motorcycles, the left lever is the clutch, and it is used to connect and disconnect the engine power to the rear wheel, allowing to change gears.

On the other hand, on scooter-type motorcycles, the right brake is located on the left lever.

To operate both, you simply have to squeeze fully with four fingers, leaving the thumb to hold the handlebar.

Right handle

On all types of motorcycles, the right lever is the rear brake, and when squeezed, it will automatically stop the movement of the rear wheel. It is more advisable to brake with the rear brake than with the front, as it is safer and reduces the risk of accidents.

To use the rear brake correctly, the ideal is to brake little by little, in order to avoid excessive wear on the pads, as well as a possible fall due to sudden braking.

The motor

When we talk about the engine we are referring to the heart of a motorcycle, since all the operation of the motorcycle will depend on it.

The motorcycles are powered by gasoline engines that can be two or four-stroke, although in recent times, two-stroke engines are only used by those motorcycles with a smaller displacement, with the aim of preserving the environment and reducing pollution.

In the past, motorcycles always used two-stroke engines, something that has changed since this type of engine burns oil more aggressively, which translates into greater pollution.

The number of cylinders in a motorcycle can range from one to six. Typically, lower displacement bikes use a single cylinder, while larger bikes usually have four cylinders in line, or two V-cylinders with different angles. It must also be said that until the 70s, the most common was a system of two transverse parallel cylinders.

Normally the engine is usually located transversely, which means that the crankshaft remains perpendicular to the gear, regardless of the number of cylinders. In this way, lubrication is produced both for the engine and also for the gearbox, except in two-stroke engines.

At first, the engine ignition was produced by magneto and points, without using any battery. This changed over time, requiring a coil and a battery, and today practically all engines are turned on electronically.

Next we are going to tell you the main components that we find inside a motorcycle engine:

Engine pistons

In general, motorcycles have one, or two pistons at most, which have the function of creating the energy necessary to power the motorcycle , and get it to work.

An energy that it creates thanks to a combustion system, which can be two or four times. In the case of two-stroke engines, they have a simpler mechanism, and it only has to be in charge of mixing the oil with the gasoline, in order to lubricate and provide power to the engine.

On the other hand, four-stroke motorcycles have two different cycles, one for intake and one for exhaust. In this type of engines, gasoline is kept separate from gasoline, which favors less wear and tear, and that they enjoy a longer useful life.

Camshaft

When talking about the different parts of a motorcycle in general, and the engine in particular, we have to pay special attention to the camshaft, which plays a fundamental role for the correct functioning of the motorcycle.

The camshaft is responsible for two different tasks; the first is taking care of moving the piston, and the second is making sure the valves open at the right time.

The valves work with the piston and also with the camshaft, and they are responsible for making the fuel arrive from the tank, to the motorcycle's engine. We could say that they are the conduit that connects the gas tank with the different parts of the engine that need gasoline for its operation.

Cylinders

The cylinder is the part in charge of allowing the movement of the piston, getting the propulsion and combustion to take place. All cylinders, when they are in the middle of the piston revolutions, cause a small explosion inside the engine.

Carburetor

Within the different parts of a motorcycle, the carburetor is responsible for mixing the air with the gasoline, before the fuel reaches the cylinder. Its role is fundamental, since guaranteeing the correct mixture of gasoline and are is very important for the correct operation of the engine. It is also possible that your motorcycle does not have this part since there are already electronic injection systems that do this same job in a more intelligent way.

If there was an excess of air or gasoline, it would cause the motorcycle to backfire and would not allow it to circulate at too high a power.

Horn

The horn is one of the parts of a motorcycle that ensures our safety, since it allows us to alert other drivers or pedestrians to any type of danger.

In general, the horn is usually located on the left side of the handlebar, next to the grip, and to activate it you just have to press the button fully.

Rearview mirrors

The rear-view mirrors are also very important while driving, as they will allow us to perfectly visualize any type of element that may interfere with traffic.

To adjust your rear view mirrors correctly, it is important that you can see through the end of your shoulder at the bottom edge of the mirror. Under no circumstances should you adjust the mirrors while you are driving.

Tires

Little goes without saying about the tires, apart from the fact that it is essential to always drive with tires in perfect condition, that are not damaged or worn, and that also have the necessary amount of air.
