There is nothing worse than a motorcycle falling apart while you ride. It is as dangerous as it sounds, so you have to take care of what holds your motorcycle together: the screws. By checking that they are tight and in good condition the trip will be safe.

Normally, all the motorcycle hardware is made of stainless steel, which despite its name, tends to have rust and corrosion on its components. These can break and make or just take away the normal structural strength of the bike. In extreme cases, they make it impossible to continue maintenance by not being able to disassemble some components due to rust.

The most exposed screws

All motorcycle bolts are exposed to the elements and can rust at some point, so it is essential to prevent this chemical process completely. When some water enters and is trapped in a seal between a bolt and a nut, the oxygen and heat begin to generate rust.

Many screws are covered by a small plastic cover to protect and you can replicate this cover with some spray plastic, in case it has been broken, dislodged, or your bike never had them. Just spray around the screw heads. However this will not work if they already have moisture or rust.

How to prevent rusting of screws?

First make sure the bolts are free of any contaminants and moisture trapped in their strings. To do this, take a soaked napkin with a little loosening, rub it all over all surfaces. Verify that only a light coating of multipurpose lubricant remains on the screw, as an excess of the product would be counterproductive by preventing it from being tightened with the required force.

Then verify that they are properly tightened and if they are screws that you will never move or that require a lot of force to do so, you can use screw thread sealant products. They keep the space between the strings closed and waterproof, and they also keep the bolts in the correct position and tight.

Washing the motorcycle properly is another way the hardware is rust free. The motor of the motorcycle is where there is more heat, therefore those screws rust faster. Using a power washer will help repel contaminants that damage the screws, as well as clean the area.

When a metal oxidizes it becomes porous, that is the process we know as corrosion, making it susceptible to fractures. We do not want this to happen to your motorcycle, so the screws should be part of the maintenance routine of your motorcycle
